Future Plans

On April 26, 2007 the RethinkWaste Board of Directors approved a facility master plan that paved the way for needed environmental enhancements at the Shoreway Recycling and Disposal Center in San Carlos.

The master plan improvements are set to be constructed in three phases. Phase 1 traffic improvements are under construction and will be completed by September 2009. Phase 2 construction will begin in October 2009.

The new Shoreway Environmental Center will be a national model for sustainable building practices and innovative recycling and material handling operations.

Key features include:

  • New state of the art Materials Recovery Facility for sorting single stream recyclables from residents and businesses 
  • Expanded transfer station for more recycling and customer convenience 
  • "Green building" features such as solar panels and use of natural light 
  • New environmental education center and demonstration gardens
Groundbreaking: December 2008 (Phase 1)
Completion Date: Spring 2011
Estimated Cost: $25.42 million for building and traffic improvements and $16.87 million for new recycling processing/sorting equipment.
